In the Garden

A Photographic Encyclopedia of Indiana Flowers

Below you’ll find a portrait gallery of Indiana flowers and shrubs from the first Winter Aconite and will progress weekly to the last purple Turtlehead. Behind each portrait is a fascinating story of it’s history, botanical quirks, mythological origins, pop culture references, and hidden secrets. So take a stroll through the garden and learn something amazing along the way.

In The Garden is where we celebrate the beauty of flowers through stunning photographs and fascinating history.  My collection of flower photographs showcases the intricate details and vibrant colors of some of the most popular flowers in the world. From delicate roses to majestic lilies, my images capture the essence of these natural wonders.

But my website is more than just pretty pictures. I also explore the rich history and cultural significance of these flowers. Did you know that the daffodil has poisoned school children? Or that anemones grew at Golgatha? I delve deep into the stories behind each flower, revealing the fascinating myths and legends that have grown up around them.  From the humble daisy to the finicky azalea, each flower has a unique story to tell.

In The Garden is the perfect resource for anyone who loves flowers, whether you're a professional photographer, a history buff, or simply someone who appreciates the natural beauty of the world around us.

So come and explore our collection of photographs and histories, and discover the wonders of the flower world. Whether you're looking for inspiration, education, or just a moment of beauty, our website has everything you need.

If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.

Why this site exists:

I have often felt listless as October becomes November and our Indiana landscape retreats into 6 months of flowerless brown. So in 2022, I endeavored to capture, in as appealing a way as I knew how, every bloom from spring until fall that burst into our view. There were, in total, nearly 300 unique specimens. By documenting each flower as it bloomed, I was able to create a phenology table for my back yard too (what blooms when). Super cool. Thus, from the first Winter Aconite to the final Purple Turtlehead, this is a catalogue of that journey through my garden.

All images were captured by me. I use a Sony a7III. Two lenses seemed to lend themselves to this project: The Sigma 105mm 2.8 DG DN Macro and my favorite utility lens, the Tamron Di III RXD 28-75mm .

These flowers are all from our Indiana (Zone 6b) gardens. They are presented in order of bloom date. Come back here each week for a new bloom. (Last updated (9/2/2023)
